Drive into the city briefly and make errands. Of course, you drive to a parking garage or a parking space, close the car and go its way. A second thought of whether the car is at the angle of a surveillance camera and how safe the selected parking is actually wasted.

The safety of these systems is becoming increasingly important. Under -modern and adaptable surveillance solutions are required. Security managers and IT managers are faced with a variety of complex challenges, since it is no longer “only” about protecting their own assets, but also that of each individual customer. Q-Park, a leading provider of services for the management of parking systems in Europe, faced this challenge and decided to take a pioneering step to modernize its security infrastructure.

Support up to Windows 7. And then?

The previous video surveillance solutions at Q-Park had reached their limits. Due to the outdated and special hardware, firmware updates were increasingly failed. The support for the system had also been set since Windows 7. In addition, the lack of hard disk and electricity redundancies represented a significant weak point, which could potentially lead to data loss and operating interruptions. Darren Maskrey, Head of Operations UK for Q-Park, understandably saw acute need for action here.

The search for a modern, future-proof solution led Q-Park to Synology. The expert in data backup, whose call is based on innovative hardware and software solutions for the management of digital content, is also devoted to the development of advanced video surveillance systems.

Well thought -out integration and central CMS

After careful evaluation, Q-Park finally decided to use Synology Rackstation and the implementation of the Synology video surveillance solution Surveillance Station. A central rack server unit was installed as a host server in the main office in Leeds and other smaller rack units in some parking facilities. A total of 2,000 cameras were set up at the various locations. Thanks to the high compatibility with over 8,300 IP camera models and the extensive support of the OnVIF standard, the grown patchwork of different camera models did not become an obstacle to successful implementation.

The Centralized Management System (CMS) of Synology Surveillance Station enables the Q-Park teams to efficiently manage the surveillance systems using a console. You can access the live feeds from a distance or via mobile apps and also roll out firmware updates conveniently and across location. The administrative effort and thus also the costs have reduced the Q-Park. “In many ways, the new video surveillance system from Synology is a great improvement compared to the old system. The IP-based remote access allows real-time access to all nationwide systems so that any locations and cameras can be displayed and checked with just a few clicks,” says Darren Maskrey.

Another decisive advantage for Q-Park was the seamless integration of existing Microsoft ad domestic containers. This enabled custom authorization and simplified the authentication for the guard personnel. This not only promoted the efficiency of the monitoring operations, but also increased the overall safety of the systems. The use of redundant power supply and hard drives finally minimized Darren Maskrey’s concern for downtimes. This additional redundancy now ensures the continuous availability of the surveillance systems.

“Overall, it is an excellent platform to make video surveillance a much more effective and useful tool for us, from security to general applications. And our customers have the calming certainty that their vehicles are safe with us,” says Darren Maskrey.

Set up access permits for company premises

Synology Surveillance Station also offers the possibility to set up automatic license plate recognition and thus an automated barrier opening. This can not only benefit parking space economists, but also companies of all sizes, for example to check the access to the company premises and to set up access control with little effort.
